Politics explores debates on political and social issues, current affairs and how decisions affecting society are made. Gain an understanding of how democracy works in the UK and how it could be improved. You will also analyse the views of different political parties, individuals and groups.

The first year focuses on British politics, switching to US politics in your second year. This will help you make more sense of UK and international developments, whilst stimulating you to think critically and consider different points of view.

You will also study different political ideologies, such as socialism, liberalism, conservatism and feminism, and the way they aim to organise society. Develop your analytical and debating skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the way laws are made.

What do I need?

Grade 9-5 in an essay subject (GCSE English, GCSE History or GCSE RS).

What next?

A Level Politics is particularly recommended for students interested in studying law at university. Politics also combines well with subjects such as history, sociology and religious studies, and prepares for careers in the legal professions, journalism, politics and management.
