Maria lands a behind-the-scenes look into the life of an MP

One of our students has been gaining valuable insights into the world of politics after landing work experience with a local MP.

Maria Moldovan impressed Leeds Central and Headingley MP Alex Sobel with the letter she sent in to apply for ‘Alex’s Academy’ – a short work-experience programme run at Mr Sobel’s constituency office.

The 17 year old heard about the opportunity from her Politics teacher, and jumped at the chance of getting a behind-the-scenes look at how politicians work.

A motivational experience

The three-day academy left a strong impression on Maria, who is also studying history and sociology. She said: “I found my experience at Alex’s constituency office to be very valuable and enjoyable, in a positive and welcoming environment.

“We got to listen to talks from Alex and his team about how Parliament works and what an MP does. I found it very interesting to learn about all of the work that goes into being an MP and how he and his team cooperate to get things done.

“We also got to hold debates in groups and to talk more widely about current problems and events, and what Alex and the Labour party are doing. On our last day we held a debate on whether university education should be free, which was very valuable for developing teamwork and communication skills.

“The experience of meeting and getting to talk to people directly involved in Parliament made me sure that I want to go to university and study politics further on.”

Inspiring future careers

Mr Sobel said: “It was a pleasure to welcome 20 young people, aged 15 to 18, to our Alex Academy Work Experience Week this summer.

“The programme gave participants a unique insight into how an MP’s office works, from supporting constituents to understanding the role of Parliament.

“It was incredibly encouraging to see their enthusiasm, curiosity and commitment throughout the week. We hope the experience has inspired them to engage with public service, politics and their future careers with confidence.”
