A Level History develops your critical thinking and analytical skills, the ability to evaluate evidence and draw informed conclusions. Skills and knowledge acquired through the course will be demonstrated in a piece of coursework (unit three) and end of Year 13 examinations.
Unit one focuses on the Tudors from 1485-1603 asking how this English dynasty gained and maintained power in England during a time of intense social, economic, religious and political change.
Unit two, the American Dream: Illusion and Reality from 1945 – 1980 looks at how America emerged from the Second World War, developing into a global superpower during the Cold War.
Unit three is a coursework unit, you will submit a 4500 word essay combining the skills of historical research, historiography and evaluation of primary sources that you have developed throughout your studies. You will choose a question based on an aspect of historical controversy in the history of Russia from 1855 – 1953.
Grade 9-5 in GCSE English or GCSE History.
The critical analysis skills that you will develop enable progression on to careers such as law, journalism, marketing and business, management and teaching. Alternatively, you could pursue specialist occupations such as archaeology, historical research and museum curation.
