Studying A Level English Language you will gain an enhanced and technical understanding of the structures and systems that underpin different languages, as well as the practical applications of these linguistic principles in real-world contexts.

A Level English Language will see you critically examine the dynamic relationship between language and the formation of ideas, beliefs and attitudes; the role language plays in society and social interaction and how language contributes to the construction and expression of individual and collective identities.

Through the exploration of key topics such as child language acquisition, and diversity, you will develop your critical awareness of language. As you gain an understanding of how language is used for a variety of purposes, you will find your own use of language changes. You will gain the ability to interpret meaning on multiple levels, become a more effective and versatile writer, confident in your ability to adapt your writing to suit different audiences and contexts.

What do I need?

Five GCSEs at grade 9-4, including GCSE English and GCSE Maths.

What next?

A Level English Language offers excellent preparation for a wide range of higher education courses such as Linguistics, English Literature, Modern Foreign Languages, the Humanities, Social Sciences and Information Technology. The knowledge and skills students gain provide a strong foundation for a diverse range of career paths, including journalism and media, information and communication technology, law, politics, civil service, education and research.
