The study of chemistry is driven by the desire to explain the behaviour of the materials around us. You will study in our specialist laboratories, developing a greater understanding of the general principles of chemistry and of a discipline that remains at the forefront of scientific development.

You will study an array of practical and theoretical modules. These include Development of Practical Skills, Foundations in Chemistry, Period Table and Energy, Core Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry Transition Elements, and Organic Chemistry and Analysis.

You will develop skills in processing data, as well as wider mathematical and numeracy skills. In addition, you will learn how to safely handle hazardous materials and scientific equipment. The course is assessed by examination at the end of each year. You will also work on an ongoing practical portfolio consisting of required experiments, which will be reported separately in the results.

What do I need?

Grade 9-5 in GCSE Chemistry or grade 9-5 in GCSE Combined Science, along with grade 9-5 in GCSE Maths

What next?

Chemistry is an essential requirement for progression on to many science-based degree courses, including veterinary science, medicine, pharmacy, forensics and chemical engineering. A Level Chemistry is also a desirable qualification for employers, particularly in science and technology sectors.
